Many people are not aware of the very low level of funding Childhood Cancer Research receives. Most people think of cancer as a disease which afflicts adults but unfortunately children are affected too. We know only too well. While adult cancers receive the vast majority of cancer research funding, childhood cancers, while not neglected, are very poorly funded in comparison.
We are doing all we can to improve the funding for Childhood Cancers and we need your help. There have been great advances in Childhood Cancer research in the past few years and new targets for theraputic drugs are being discovered. However new drugs need large amounts of research and of course it is people who undertake this task.
There are very few centres in the world which have the capability to develop new drugs. The Institute for Cancer Research here in the UK is one of them. Childhood Cancer is a worldwide issue, it affects children from all walks of life and in every part of the world. In the developed world the greatest number of deaths by disease in children is from Childhood Cancers. The incidence of cancer in children in the undeveloped world is not known.
Our objective is to fund as much research as possible and if through our efforts a cure is brought just one day forward resulting in even a single child and their family not having endure the torture we went through then all our efforts will have been worth it.
We will never be able to fully describe what we as a family endured during Christopher's illness and we sincerely hope that through your help fewer families will find out for themselves.
Our aim is to provide funding for research as it will only be the eventual discovery of a true cure that will enable our vision. We do not think it right that research is interrupted due to the lack of funding. There is work that can be done now but there are not the funds for the researchers to be put in place. Also we believe that scientists should be undertaking research, not spending their time seeking research funding.
We know times are tough at the moment, but childhood cancer does not respect economic cycles. Every day that goes by more and more children are diagnosed and their only option will be current treatments which in the main were developed for adult cancers. Please help to fund the research for new treatments which will be designed specifically to target the mechanisms that drive Childhood Cancer and will not have the devastating side effects that current treatments can have.
Please help in whatever way you can. Attend an event, get friends to sponsor you to do something or even sponsor a friend. If you'd like to help please send us an email with your details - we'd love to hear from you.
